Three members of a British family are dead after drowning at a Costa del Sol holiday resort.

A girl, nine, is said to have gotten into difficulties at Club La Costa World’s swimming pool at around 1.30pm today.

Her father, 52, and older brother allegedly jumped into the water to save her at the holiday resort overlooking the Med a short drive from Fuengirola.

Sources described the girl and her father as British but said the older boy, 16, was travelling on an American passport.

Police divers inspected the pool this afternoon.

One insider close to the ongoing probe said: ‘The girl’s brother and then the father jumped into the water when they saw she was in difficulties.

‘All three have died.

‘An investigation is ongoing so it is too early to say what has happened.’

‘The guests were found unresponsive in one of the resort’s pools.

‘First response teams and emergency services attended and administered first aid.

‘The management are assisting the authorities fully with their investigation into the deaths.

‘We would like to thank our first response team and the emergency services for their quick and appropriate responses, and our staff for the continuing support of the family at this difficult time.’

The resort where three deaths occurred today is the same one where a British girl, nine, died in February after suffering a severe allergic reaction to an ice-cream.

The bodies of the three people who died in this afternoon’s incident have been transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Malaga.

Autopsies are expected to take place tomorrow.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has been approached for comment.
